Sports and participation across Louisiana

Special Olympics Louisiana is a nonprofit organization with its office in Covington. It is authorized and accredited by Special Olympics, Inc. as the Louisiana programme. The state organization coordinates a wider network of regional and local opportunities; a local training programme is not a separate statewide organization.

Its mission includes year-round training and competition in Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. Activities create opportunities to practise skills, develop fitness and participate with peers, families and volunteers. The organization’s regional map and calendar identify programmes and events in different communities.

Health screening, education and fitness

Healthy Athletes provides health screenings and education in settings designed to welcome athletes with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics Louisiana also identifies Performance Stations and Unified Fitness Club among its health and wellness activities. These programmes connect sport participation with information and support for everyday health.

Volunteer health professionals help coordinate and deliver Healthy Athletes activities. Clinical Directors work with the local Special Olympics programme and other volunteers, while participating professionals gain experience of communicating and working with people with intellectual disabilities. The programme therefore has an educational role for both athletes and the health workforce.

Finding a local opportunity

The statewide website brings together information for athletes, families, coaches and volunteers. Local training programmes and scheduled events are the practical points of contact for participation, while the Covington office supports the statewide organization. Health and wellness events are listed through the same regional resources and calendar.
