Origins and institutional identity
The Institute for Health and Healing was created in 2003 with support from the George Family and the Ted and Roberta Mann foundations. It adopted the Penny George name in 2008. The George Family Foundation’s 2019 report places that naming within its support for work at Allina’s Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
The institute is presented as a service programme within Allina Health, rather than as a separate hospital or independent patient association. Allina’s privacy-practices document revised on 23 January 2026 continues to list the Penny George Institute among its named facilities and service lines.
Clinical and supportive services
Allina’s current service page describes integrative consultations, nutrition services, health coaching, classes and selected bedside services. Some consultations are available virtually. Hospital and clinic offerings differ by location, and the service page distinguishes insurance-based care from services paid for directly.
A November 2022 Allina Cancer Institute account explains how Penny George clinicians work with oncology colleagues. The described approach uses supportive consultations and complementary practices alongside standard cancer treatment. It includes nutrition counseling, movement, mindfulness and other services selected around a patient’s circumstances. This organizational description is not a claim that complementary approaches replace cancer treatment or improve every cancer outcome.
Education and scope
Education has also formed part of the institute’s work. A February 2018 Allina brochure describes a nurse training programme and a broader remit involving professional education, community wellbeing and research. That brochure documents a historical example; it is not a current course schedule.
The maintained institute page continues to describe training for health professionals and leaders, together with classes for patients and community participants. These activities explain the programme’s connection to health education and patient experience. Availability of particular modalities, coverage and clinical suitability depend on the service and care setting.
