History and campus role

The university approved creation of its University Health Service in spring 1918, and the clinic opened that September. Dental and mental health services were added during the 1920s. Ruth Boynton directed the service from 1936 to 1961, and it was renamed in her honor in 1975.

Boynton’s institutional history also describes health education and assessments of student health as part of its development. This history places it within the university’s clinical and preventive infrastructure, rather than identifying it as an independent hospital or a general public health department.

Clinical services for the university community

The current new-student guide lists primary care, mental health care, pharmacy, physical therapy, nutrition, eye care, gynecology, sexual health testing and immunizations. These services connect routine medical care with concerns commonly encountered during university life. The East Bank clinic at 410 Church Street Southeast is the main clinical location.

Service eligibility is not identical across all clinics. Boynton’s mission page states that its mental health and travel clinics serve students, while other services also accept university faculty and staff. Those distinctions matter when interpreting the broad description of the campus population it serves.

Campus public health and mental health programmes

Boynton’s published autumn 2026 vaccine schedule includes East Bank, West Bank and Saint Paul campus locations. The schedule provides dated evidence of its preventive work beyond individual clinic appointments. It is a record of that semester’s programme rather than a permanent timetable.

Its autumn 2026 mental health information also describes therapy groups, support groups and educational workshops. Students may be asked to attend an orientation before joining a group. These programmes sit alongside individual clinical services and health education, illustrating Boynton’s combined role in treatment access, prevention and support within the university community.
